Students who choose the Global Analysis concentration are required to take at least five semesters of a foreign language. With more than 100 languages available at Penn, there are many options. To complete the one semester study abroad requirement for the Global Analysis concentration, students can study at any of Penn’s partner universities in countries such as Israel, Argentina, Italy and Singapore. Students who want additional study-abroad experience can apply to go on a Wharton International Program (WIP) tour. In the WIP program, a group of Wharton students takes a faculty-led tour to visit businesses and attend university lectures in a foreign country. Business in China is all about who you know, so finding a good visa agent is the best way to ensure a hassle-free renewal of your Chinese visa. If you would like to do it yourself, which is cheaper, you must renew your China visa if it is about to expire and you are in China. This can best be done in Hong Kong at the Hong Kong Immigration Office, Shanghai’s Entry and Exit Bureau in Pudong or in your country of residence at the Chinese Embassy of Consulate.


  1. Have a valid unexpired visa in hand. Otherwise, you would not be renewing for a visa, but instead applying for a visa. If granted in Shanghai, a tourist (L) visa can only be renewed twice for 30 days each, allowing you 90 days in the country total.   3. Be prepared to wait three to seven days for the processing of your renewal. In China, this may entail making travel accommodations to, from and in Hong Kong or Shanghai. The wait at pickup should not be as long–most likely, 30 minutes to an hour. At the Shanghai office, there is the option of picking up the visa in person or having it delivered to your home or office for a fee.
  4. Bring an extra photo when taking your renewal forms to the offices if renewing in Hong Kong or Shanghai. With this, officials will provide an official temporary passport for traveling the week without your passport.
  5. Bring any proof of travel accommodations for your trip, especially your flight info, just in case. Officials will want to know that you don’t plan to stay beyond the time limit you are allowed.

The history of Chinese culture can be traced back more than 5,000 years. Although different periods were based on a number of different cultures, including Han, Mongol and Manchurian cultures, rapid introduction of American cultural influence began in the late 20th century and continue to present times. While older Chinese people may reject some American influences, many younger Chinese people adopt foreign practices and concepts easily.

Fast-FoodIn the past, fast food in China was considered a street vendor serving one of many unusual local specialties or noodles. However, Kentucky Fried Chicken opened its first restaurant in Beijing in 1987. Chinese University of Hong Kong

  • The 339-acre Chinese University of Hong Kong campus overlooking Tolo Harbour is the largest and greenest in Hong Kong, according to the school website. The campus includes libraries, museums, music halls, a swimming pool, sports fields, tennis courts, squash courts and a water sports center. Its researchers are published in the journals “Science,” “Nature” and “The Lancet.” The university is composed of nine colleges and 18 areas of excellence for research, including the Center for Organelle Biogenesis and Function, the Historical Anthropology of Chinese Society center and the Center for Plant and Agricultural Biotechnology.

Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

  • Founded in 1991, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology overlooks the Clear Water Bay peninsula. Scholars at the university had applied for 149 patents and received 80 as of 2014. University scientists are working on 753 funded projects on a research budget of $548 million Hong Kong dollars, about $71 million in U.S. dollars. Faculty at the university come with degrees from Oxford, Cambridge, Caltech, Harvard, Yale, Columbia and Stanford universities. The school has 250 exchange programs and its executive MBA program was ranked best in the world in 2013 by the “Financial Times.”

City University of Hong Kong

  • The City University of Hong Kong has student exchange agreements with 100 schools in 28 countries. The university has seven colleges with 24 academic departments. For the 2013-14 school year the university had more than 800 professors, including more than 300 in science and engineering. For the 2012-13 school year the university had 1,735 research projects underway with a research budget of $975 million Hong Kong dollars, about $127 million U.S. dollars. Of the students who graduated in 2013, 88 percent were employed and 8 percent were enrolled in post-graduate programs. Sixty percent of the 2013 graduates with jobs worked in commerce and business.

Choose your agent wisely and carefully.


  1. Determine whether it is time for you to get an agent. If you are new to broadcast journalism, then you probably don’t need one. You can get jobs in small markets by yourself. If you are ready to make the jump to a top 30 market, then it’s time to consider hiring an agent.
  2. Decide what you want your agent to do for you. For example, decide if you want your agent to pitch you to top-level news directors. If so, your agent must have great contacts and long-term relationships with those news directors.   • The writing of a news report begins long before the first word is put to paper. It starts with solid reporting and research. Compile the known facts in an outline form for organization and to make it easier to write, clean, succinct copy later. Take the time to reach out to sources who can corroborate or substantiate the facts and provide first-hand information. The News Manual, an online source for professional journalists, the media and news reporters, recommends contacting other journalists, primary sources — someone directly involved in the event being covered — written sources, leaked documents, secondary sources and tip-offs. Choose the article’s sources well, and then prepare for the interview by developing insightful questions. Take accurate notes when conducting an interview. Many reporters opt to record their interviews for complete accuracy and quotes.

Writing the Lead

  • The article’s lead must grab and engage the reader immediately. As the first sentence, it should convey the topic of the report. But some leads may pick a particular angle to grab attention or use an anecdote to make the story more relatable to the reader. Write your lead in active voice using strong verbs and vivid language. Use as few words as possible; good leads typically have only 25 to 30 words. The story requires a quick and concise introduction as it sets the stage to deliver the promise created by the lead and headline. Overall, a solid news article answers the questions of who, what, where, when, why and how.

The Correct Facts

  • Ohlone College teaches that the ABCs of news writing are accuracy, brevity and clarity — with accuracy at the top of the list. “A story can be creative and compelling, but if it contains errors, it is worthless. Actually, it is worse than worthless; a false news story undercuts the public trust necessary for the survival of a free press.” Facts trump everything else — writing style, narrative or previous reports. Check and double-check each of your facts. Attribute facts accurately, as well as any information that is a matter of someone’s opinion. It is especially important that you get names right.

Making it Newsworthy

  • The key to writing a successful news report beings with knowing why the story is important and who its audience is. When writing a news article, think about what you audience already knows. Figure out why they care about the story you plan to write. If you are writing a sports report, put it in context for fans — explain why this particular game matters. If you are writing about a debate on a tax increase, explain who is affected by it, its overall impact and the actual amount of the increase. If you are covering a crime story, cite where it occurred and who was involved. Elements that make a story newsworthy include when it occurs, how close it is to the reader, how much it affects people, how prominent it is and whether it has human interest elements. Identify these things in your story to ensure you include them in the article.

Organizing the Copy

  • News reports have a slightly different format than most other narratives or academic reports. News reports use an inverted pyramid style in which the most important information is given first. Important details follow with supporting and background information given later in the story. At the end, include any contact information the reader may need. Do not bring your personal opinion to bear in a news article, remain objective and let the facts and the participants tell the story. Avoid making statements that may be construed as editorial opinions, overtly negative or in support of or against the issues.

How to Use Quotes in a News Article

Quoting sources in an article lends both color and credibility to a news story. However, a writer should only use quotes that advance the narrative in a clarifying and concise way. If the reporter can make a point more clearly by paraphrasing in her own words, she should do so.

Basic Rules for Quotes

  • A reporter shouldn’t start a news story with a quote. A quote should only be included if the speaker has valuable information that enlightens and engages the reader; dry facts or statistics are usually better left in the reporter’s text. For example, if a reporter is writing about an entertainment event, there’s little value in quoting the promoter of the event if all he says is, “The event begins at 8 p.m.” Quotes should be used to give voice to the opinions and emotions of sources. A reporter might use a quote from that same promoter if he says, “We’ve tried for years to get this band to appear at our festival, and this year they finally said yes.” The Associated Press discourages the use of partial quotes. AP also suggests using quotes for a source’s controversial or sensitive remarks. In a story about a speech or an individual, the first quote should be no lower in the story than the third or fourth paragraph, according to The News Manual.

Rules for Attribution

  • The speaker should usually be listed after the quote, as in the following example: “The mayor’s speech was too brief,” said Councilman Mike Jones. If another speaker is quoted immediately following a quote, then it’s fine to give the speaker attribution before the quote to avoid confusing the reader: “The mayor’s speech was too brief,” said Councilman Mike Jones. But Councilman Joe Smith disagreed, and said, “The mayor was concise and to the point.” If the quote is more than one sentence, attribution should be given to the speaker after the first sentence.

In colonial Pennsylvania, people lived very differently than most of us do today. Still, cultures all have their own forms of entertainment, and people in colonial Pennsylvania engaged in various forms of amusement. Some of these activities have survived until contemporary times, while others are now rare. Still others were forbidden at times, because of strict ideas about what activities were acceptable. Regardless, even many of these forbidden activities became more and more popular and remain part of American culture today.


  • The colonial period lasted from 1681 to 1776 in Pennsylvania. Many of Pennsylvania’s settlers were Quakers, and there were also many Dutch settlers as well as people of other nationalities. During this time, many people’s strict religious beliefs kept them from participating in certain pastimes such as gambling, horse racing, singing, dancing, and play-acting. However, colonists still participated in many other forms of entertainment.


  • In colonial Pennsylvania, children’s games and toys were simple and taught them useful skills, as history teacher Kristin Carolla says. Some of these games are still popular today, like leap frog, marbles, and hopscotch. Others survived until recent times, like blind man’s bluff and pick up sticks. Blind man’s bluff is much like Marco Polo. It is a game of tag in which the person who is “It” can’t see the other players. Puzzles, tops, Jacob’s ladders, and dolls made from rags and cornhusks were common toys, says Carolla, and girls would often make their own dolls to practice sewing. Jacob’s ladder is a simple toy made from wood and ribbons. It is made from six wooden blocks that are strung together. When one block is pushed, that causes the entire chain of blocks to move.


  • Other common games that were played by people of all ages included fox and geese, checkers, and hull, gull, how many, according to the book “Home Life in Colonial Days.” People often used kernels of corn as counting pieces, says this book. In fox and geese, a board game, one player (the fox) tries to “eat” the other players (the geese), who try to trap the fox. In hull, gull, how many, players would try to guess how many of something (like kernels of corn) another player holds in her hands. Of course, children enjoyed spending time exploring and playing outdoors too. Boys generally had more freedom to do this than girls. They were encouraged to hunt, fish, and explore. Girls typically spent more time in the home, because they were learning to embody the traditional role of wife and mother.


  • Books such as Robinson Crusoe, Pilgrim’s Progress, and Gulliver’s Travels were popular among both children and adults, says Alice Morse Earle in “Child Life in Colonial Days.” Books written for children, she says, were hard to come by in the early days of the colonies. Jest books were popular among children and adults, however. These books were filled with amusing stories and riddles, Morse Earle says. Riddles, she adds, were a popular pastime for children. In 1744, she states, the book publisher John Newberry began bringing children’s literature to the colonies, which then gained popularity. Young people also enjoyed interpreting their dreams, says Morse Earle, especially when children’s literature was scarce.


  • Taverns were becoming more and more popular, say the authors of “Home Life in Colonial Days.” The authors add that tavern owners had to follow strict rules, though. Often, games, singing, and dancing were forbidden. These activities were often seen as a waste of time, or as encouraging unruly behavior.


  • As the website says, many colonists frowned upon theatre because they felt it was a waste of time at best. However, performances still happened from time to time. In 1759, the website says, a new law forbade theatrical performances, but it’s likely that play-acting still happened secretively from time to time.


  • Children in colonial Pennsylvania celebrated Halloween much like kids do today. They would dress up in scary costumes and collect treats–but unlike most children today, their reason for dressing up was to scare away evil spirits, as the website “Colonial Kids: A Celebration of Life in the 1700s” says. First Skating Day was another important day in the world of a colonial child, says the website. This was the first winter day when children did not have to go to school, and could spend the day playing outside. Kids would also celebrate April Fool’s Day, and Dutch families would decorate eggs on Easter.
    Additionally, says Morse Earle, some colonists enjoyed painting on glass as a leisure pursuit.

How to Shoot a Television News Story news pieces might look spontaneous, but they follow a formula. Whenever you shoot a story, keep the editing process in mind. As a cameraman you’re part of a team that includes the editor, reporter, and anchor.


  1. The actuality is the portion of the story that shows what is happening. If you’re covering an event like a fire, you’ll need to show it with a variety of camera angles, long shots to establish the context, medium close ups to show people, and close ups for details. It’s okay to rehearse a move before committing it to tape. You’ll save time in editing that way. You want to give an editor maximum flexibility. Construct your shots so that they can be used three ways. Begin by holding on your opening for 5-10 seconds. Make your move such as a pan, tilt or zoom smoothly. Finish on your closing shot for the same 5-10 seconds. That way your editor can choose the beginning, end. or the transitions with a bit of both.
  2. Make sure that you shoot plenty of detail in cutaways. If you see anything that is remotely interesting, shoot it in close up Don’t be afraid to linger on a shot so that the voice over that will ultimately accompany your story has plenty of time.
  3. Even though you are shooting and not writing, keep in mind the universal questions that each journalist will ask: Who, What, Why, When, Where and How. Answer these questions visually and you’ll make life easier for your news writer or reporter.
  4. It’s a good idea to use auto iris to get a starting point for exposure, but then adjust your f stop accordingly. If you leave your camera on auto iris, you could have some unintended anomalies in your video. Last week, I was shooting a gang summit in Los Angeles in a warm school gymnasium. I wanted to use auto iris because the light varied throughout the room and I had to move the camera on one very long shot, however a couple of the participants picked up some white hand fans supplied by the sponsors. Every time one of them picked up one to cool herself, the image would darken.
  5. Frequently as a cameraman you’ll be called upon to do the interviews. Whenever possible, put the camera on a tripod. Tell your subject to stand still, focus, and lock the camera down. Stand right next to your camera and ask your questions. Make sure that your interview subject looks at you and not the camera. Get into the habit of always asking your interview subject to identify themselves, give their affiliation and spell their names.
  6. In contrast to the interview, reporters will deliver their information directly to the camera. I like to frame stand ups so that we have a clear sense as to the environment in which the story occurs, framing a reporter waist up in a medium shot. Pay special attention to the lighting on the reporter. If you make him or her look good, you’ll be asked back to repeat your work. Most news crews don’t carry one, but I find that a flex fill reflector is worth carrying for stand ups in bright sun. If positioned right it can fill in the shadows and show a reporter to his best.

Free-form documents look amateurish and can be difficult for audio-visual professionals to understand. Professional writers follow simple layout guidelines to get their ideas across to readers efficiently. Here are the basic scriptwriting formats that screenwriters and news producers use for entertainment productions and news programming

Movies and Television Shows

  1. Identify the backdrop of the scene. Begin by telling the reader if the action happens indoors or outside by using the abbreviations “INT.” for interior or “EXT.” for exterior. Follow this up with a succinct description of the location followed by a dash and a time reference. This section should be bold face and written in all capitals. For example: INT. RESTAURANT — NIGHT.
  2. Insert dialogue. To signal that a character is talking, center-align his or her name and write the dialogue left-aligned below. Write character names with capital letters but write dialogue text normally.
  3. Describe action happening in the scene. Signal when characters enter or exit the scene and describe any important action with detailed passages. Italicize and left-align these descriptions.

Television News

  1. Write the slug, or name of your story, at the top of the page.
  2. Format the rest of the page so you have two columns. The left side is primarily for the technical staff. The right side of the page is primarily for the on-air talent.
  3. Write the name of the person you want to read the story on the top of both columns. Use capital letters.
  4. Next make note of the video format you want to use in both columns using capital letters. Use “ON CAM” if you want your talent on screen and nothing else. “VO” means video only. Use this when you have video footage that you want your anchor to talk over. “SOT” stands for sound on tape or sound bites. “PKG” stands for package, a complete stand-alone video story with its own voice-over track and cuts of video. Make sure these video format commands line up on both sides of the page.
  5. On the left column write down any additional information about the video that would be useful for the staff. You may want to include tape numbers and the title of the video you’re using. For packages, include the “TRT” or total running time and an out cue, the final words of voice track.
  6. Write the script on the right column. Use capital letters for anything your talent is going to read on-air. Use lower and uppercase lettering for scripts that are recorded and will be played back–packages and SOTs for example.
  7. Write down any CGs or computer graphics you want on the left. Common CGs include names and locations.

How to Write a TV News Package Script journalists know how to create a news story by answering the age-old questions of who, what, where, when, why and how. But doing so for a television news program isn’t the same as writing a news piece for a newspaper or a magazine; it’s a horse of a different color. As a self-contained news story, the news package contains video footage, interviews, sound bites, voice-over narration and sometimes a stand-up, which can occur at the beginning, middle or end of the story. Employ words in the narration that evoke images and sound good, especially for the introduction.

Find the Story

  • Before you begin the process of creating the news package script, complete the legwork in the field. Research the facts, interview key witnesses or people involved in the news event with your cameraman in tow. Find the common thread in the story to help track down people from whom you can get sound bites — called sounds on tape or SOTs in the industry. Remember that a televised news story has a limited amount of time, so stick to stories that your community will find interesting or important.

Compelling Stand-Ups

  • Look for good locations to complete your stand ups; as the reporter who advances the story in the field, choose a location that depicts the activity or the event in the background. Avoid repetition in the material collected from the field and keep the reporting neutral. Stick to a narrative style, ensuring that every word conveys important information. Work with the camera person to get compelling video footage — the B-roll — for the news voice overs. Also, find captivating NSOTs, natural sounds on tape, such as the sound of pounding ocean waves or rushing river during a massive storm or the chugging of a train as long as it ties into the news story.

Back in the Studio

  • Use the television studio’s script software system, template or create two columns on your page, the left for video and the right for audio. The left identifies the intro, shot or interviewee, slugs, SOT, NSOTs or voice over, while the right side contains the words for the audio portion. Each studio may have its own format and protocols for the actual script. Write the introduction for the news anchor, keeping it concise and brief. For statistical information, create any graphics the anchor can use. Review the stand-ups, the SOTs and the NSOTs, ideally you have more than just one or two, to choose the best ones to include in your package script. Ensure that the video content on the left includes the written words for the audio on the right. Use NSOTs to create natural breaks in the content.

Record the Audio

  • If you have more audio that you must record from the right side of your script, do so in the studio’s audio booth. Identify each audio track individually on the script by the protocol required for the television studio. If you must complete more than one take, ensure the audio portion of the script contains this information. Once this is completed, hand the news package script into the editor for final review. Don’t forget to include any release or waiver forms you obtained in the field from those you interviewed.
